Baudelaire's sonnet, A une passante, vividly depicts the observation of a woman in a bustling Parisian street and also focuses on the memory and impact of this event. The narrator potently recalls the incident, before intensely describing its effect on him, thereby exploring some key themes of nineteenth century French poetry such as beauty, communication, and remembrance. A une passante can be divided into three distinct parts in which the narrator recalls the observation of the woman in the past, the incident's effects in the present, and its implications for the future. These divisions do not entirely correspond to the layout of the sonnet, where it could be argued, for instance, that there is enjambement between the end of the first quatrain and the second.
