Jared Weingartner October 7, 2004 English IV 3rd Hour Mr. Pickel "Beowulf: A Modern Hero" Many people have different ideas of what make a hero. Some believe it is courage and bravery, while others feel the true definition of a hero lies in loyalty and servitude. Yet few would disagree that the men and women of New York's fire department are exemplary models of heroes. They sacrificed their time and health and endangered their lives to help those in need during the September 11 terrorist attacks, despite the fact that their dedication cost some of them their lives. While there are those who would argue that Beowulf was a braggart who helped others for his own personal agenda, he placed himself in the same kinds of danger as those firemen and ended up saving two nations. Beowulf rushed into the fights with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon without any reserve, holding only a fierce...
