... The Way of the World The relationship between Mistress Marwood and Mrs. Fainall is extremely complicated. Mrs. Fainall is married to Fainall but she hates him knowing that he only married her for her fortune. Mistress Marwood, although disliking Fainall, is having an affair with him and helps him plot against Mirabell for her own benefits. Mrs Fainall knows of her husband's unfaithfulness and of Mistress Marwood's plot, and therefore decides to help Mirabell in his plan. Mistress Marwood and Mrs. Fainall are therefore warring indirectly while appearing polite to each other when encountering face to face. Until the end, Mistress Marwood and Mrs. Fainall have never been blatantly hostile to each other. There were on a level of mutual hatred, yet while they converse they seem to be extremely friendly in dialogue. One can easily sense an air of discomfort between them, yet if their conversation was to be closely examined,
