'Dulce et Decorum Est,' by Wifred Owen. ...... Explain how there was a change in war poetry. During World War 1, from the poetry of Victorian times. The poem was set in the Crimean War, which took place between 1854 and 1856. At the battle of Balaclava, the British cavalry attacked. In the battle 600 men on horseback were ordered to try and capture the Russian cannons. The cannons fired at them to the left and right of them and even from the top as they charged to try and capture them. They failed so they retreated and out of the 600 men only 200 of them survived. They had only been in the valley for 20 minutes. This war was all about the Russians trying to get routes...
