The Home Front 1914-1918 G.Holgate Coursework Assignment Why did the number of women employed in Britain begin to rise significantly from mid 1915? The war bestowed two valuable legacies on women. First, it opened up a wider range of occupations to female workers and secondly it hastened the collapse of traditional women's employment, particularly domestic service. In August 1914 Britain went to war with Germany. As the army grew in size, women found work, making equipment for soldiers, such as uniforms, boots and medical dressings. During 1915 many women also took over the work of husbands, brothers or fathers, who had joined the army. Due to heavy losses at the Western Front the government decided to introduce conscription (compulsory enrolment) by passing the Military Service Act on 2nd February 1916.
