-The Battle of the Somme- -26^th June 1916- This battle was soon to be regarded as on of the most bloody and controversial military blunders of British history. Incompetent generals were put in charge of literally thousands of men and boy's lives, some no older than 14-15. They were placed in ranks in accordance with their social status and had little to do with military capability. Due to their generals and captains troops soon became no more than cannon fodder, with a tally of 60,000 casualties, and thousands of deaths, and their dying comrades haunted survivors for decades to come, due to their haunting images of explosions, and gas attacks. Despite this the British allies forced a general retreat ordered by general Molkte, but the reatreat was quickly stopped, the German allies dug trenches and turned to face the British allies, forcing a stalemate, and attrition.
