Is The Film King And Country Useful To A Historian? In the film "King and Country", a young private is accused of desertion and is held near the front. Set during a muddy, and bloody war his make shift jail is nothing but a hut surrounded by front line troops weary from battle and who have dealt with the dead so long, it no longer effects them in any humane way. Courtenay is visited by Captain Hargreaves (Bogarde), who has been asked to defend him. At first, the Captain would himself like to see the private be executed, but as the trial progresses he becomes more empathetic to the privates plight, who was the last man alive in his squad after fighting for three years. The part of the private is played with stunning emotion and depth by Courtenay, who is all too human, reflecting everyman in his dilemma....
