History Coursework World War 1 was a devastating war that rocked civilisation at that time and cut a scar of hatred between countries for years to come. It consisted of Germany who fought against Britain, France and Belgium. The war took place mainly along the trenches in France. Both historians and politicians have described the war as "lions led by donkeys" and I am going to investigate why this statement was used. To fully understand why this statement was used I shall find sources and weigh up each individual piece of evidence that agrees and disagrees with this statement but also look at the reliability of it and background information. The soldiers are referred to as 'lions' insinuating that they are courageous, brave, strong, and fearless and are speaking of the soldiers but by 'donkeys' they mean the generals and are calling them stubborn, clumsy and dull.
