How successfully does RC Sheriff convey the reality of war? I think in the play the reality of war is very successfully conveyed. The characters are believable and the way they deal with their stress and anxieties is true to the way we would in the same situation. RC sheriff gives a good account of life in the war, as he fought in the war himself. He was born in 1896 in Hampton Wick. After he left school he joined his Father's insurance business. When war broke out he joined the East Surrey Regiment where he served as captain from 1916-1917. He would have been about 20 years old, and around the same age as Stanhope, the main character in the play. This could mean that the character of Stanhope is based on some of his own experiences and his own memories of war. It also could mean that the character...
