How important was Propaganda during the First World War? Introduction During the First World War the governments of the countries involved relied greatly on their citizens to settle their disputes. The needed their armed forces to be as strong as possible and this meant they needed as many men as they could get to fight. Use of propaganda encouraged men to enlist, ensured morale was kept at a high level and made the enemy seem brutal. What is Propaganda? During the First World War Propaganda was used and, as in any war - the truth suffered. Propaganda was used by the governments at the time to ensure that their people knew only what they wanted them to know, which generally was not the "whole truth." This means that governments would tell the country the truth, exaggerated, and I am sure that the governments at the time even made up stories to make their country...
