Comparison of War Poems by Wilfred Owen Introduction Wilfred Owen originated from a poor background. At the time in which the first world war broke out he was working in France as a tutor, this was 1914. 4 Years later in 1918 he was killed in action aged 25. This was one week before the war ended. His poetry is based on experiences from the first world war. Prior to the 20th century war poems were focused on heroism, self-sacrifice and patriotism, heroes who die for their country and would do anything for it, defend it with their lives. Owen's poems however were much the opposite, focusing on war as a cruelty and hellish thing. One of Wilfred Owen's poem is named Anthem for Doomed Youth. An anthem is a religious or patriotic song, something usually sung by a choir. This immediately suggests that the poem is serious, patriotic. The doomed youth mentioned...
