What is crystal clear that in the extensive body of films that deal with World War II, Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' is one of the most realistic. It consistently explores the unpredictable and random violence that engulfs and blinds the men within war. The plot is based on a squad of characters who are dragged through uncharted peril with few fitting the normal 'hero' tag of war films.
