This is a mystery poem: The mystery is; the mystery of the disappearance of Brownlee? Let's start with the crime scene: Two acres of barley One of barley Four bullocks A milker and A slated farmhouse This tells us quite a lot about both Brownlee and the historical context. It shows us that it was set a long time ago as thus was a lot back then and in the poem he seems quite wealthy. In the poem there is a hidden metaphor "The last rig unbroken, his pair of black Horses, like man and wife" This shows that Brownlee was married to his farm like they were man and wife. I don't think that Brownlee was ever married so the farm that he worked and lived on was his life; like a wife would be to a husband. I think this poem was set in Ireland as Brownlee is a common Irish name...
