While seen as foolhardy and misguided at the time, the Rebellion later affected the history of Ireland. On Easter Monday in 1916, the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Citizen Army joined forces in an ill-fated attempt to gain independence from the British Empire. The two groups allied with similar aims of using blood sacrifice and martyrs, and a successful military campaign, to incite the Irish population into an uprising against the British. The two groups, led by James Connolly and the extremist Patrick Pearse, stormed various strategic points around Dublin, and captured buildings. They made the General Post Office the rebel headquarters, and although the rebels used their element of surprise well, they failed to capture one building, Dublin Castle, the British Headquarters.
