By the early 1920's the Irish people started to listen to O'Connell's views and he gathered a large group of supporters. Daniel O'Connell had many aims in his political career. In his earlier years of power O'Connell strived for Catholic emancipation, which would give the Catholic people the right to vote. In 1929 Catholic emancipation was passed, with much controversy. Many people still believed that the Catholics did not have the right to vote, including the King and the duke of Wellington, They warned their Conservative colleagues that here would be civil war in Ireland unless the law was changed. However, Catholic emancipation stood. Although Daniel O'Connell had succeeded in passing Catholic emancipation the government made it very hard for it to have much effect. They
