Compare the way before you were mine, mother any distance, little boy lost and found and on my first sonne convey parental relationships. All poems all contain different ideas on relationships between parents and children. In before you were mine, Duffy writes about how she imagines her mother before Duffy was born. Mother any distance tells of a son's changing relationship with his mother, and what has happened as he has grown older. On my first Sonne is a father's story of his son's death, and the emotions which he has felt. Before you were mine is written in four equal stanzas of five lines each, this makes readers realise the regularity of time passing, reminding that ten years after the photo was taken, the teenager had become a mother; the poem looks at past and present viewpoints.
