Subjectivity and Language Benveniste Questions 1. Benveniste begins by stating that language has been described as the "instrument of communication" probably because as till yet mankind has not been able to develop an improved system to communicate. Benveniste describes language as an instrument to man. By calling language an instrument, he is implying that it is an external feature to man. Benveniste however believes that language is an internal thing, therefore, language cannot be an "instrument of communication" as it is an external force. Benveniste suggests that perhaps it is not language that we are speaking but rather a confusion we have made with discourse. 2. Benveniste says that to describe language as an instrument it should fill us with "mistrust". Benveniste believes that to speak of an instrument puts man and nature in opposition.
