Poetry gives us knowledge. It is knowledge of ourselves in relation to the world. "I am" by John Clare and "The Darkling Thrush" by Thomas Hardy are two poems which centre on the theme of existence. Although the poets concentrate on a similar issue, they depict different personal concerns. Clare focuses on series of feelings and worries he has been trying to overcome during his lifetime, whereas Hardy describes the loss of faith and fear of the new century. Hardy and Clare use a variety of poetic devices, such as original structure, rhyme, rhythm, and imagery, to help reinforce their experiences and create further depth to their recollections. The poems help us to gain an understanding of personal perception of the world by the poets, as well as reflect the attitude that might have been shared by other people.
