The two main characters of these scenes are Viola and Olivia, who share many parallels and contrasts. Both are young, and of noble origin, beautiful and mourn the loss of a brother; they are cast on their own resources without close or helpful relatives; both yearn for love and sympathy; their names are anagrams of each other.
