The taming of the shrew Katrina's final speech Write a critical appreciation of the passage demonstrating how it develops the audiences understanding of the theme of marriage and women's role in society. "The Taming of the Shrew" was written in the 16th century and describes the role of women in marriage at this time. By setting the play in Padua, a foreign country Shakespeare allows himself to make comment on his audience's society without directly offending them. We can see from Katrina's final speech in Act 5, Scene 2 how Shakespeare has developed the theme of women's role in marriage. Katrina's final speech demonstrates her change in attitude throughout the play. At the start of the text she is known as the "shrew", she is feisty and argument, "my mind hath been as big as one of yours". However by act 5 she has been tamed, her demeanour and opinion on women's role...
