How does the opening 15 minutes of Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet use signs and symbols and technical codes to prepare us for the rest of the story? By Elenia Davis Romeo and Juliet is about two people from confronting families who fall in love and get married behind their parents backs. Juliet is then told she is to marry Paris, another man and she has a plan to get out of it. Romeo did not know of this plan, which was Juliet was to appear dead and Romeo was to pick her up as soon as she awoke. Romeo thought Juliet was actually dead and took his own life. A few moments later Juliet woke up and saw Romeo dead, she decided she could not face another day without him so she took his dagger and stabbed herself, and died. In Luhrmann's film he modernised the setting but kept Shakespeare's language....
