'I am not what I am' Examination Question1. Q-The question of race is at the centre of the play. A-Contextually Yes σσσ Iago uses Othello's race against him, to make him seem the bad person. The use of language is intentionally shocking to portray the use of racism further. 'Iago calls Othello a 'Barbary Horse' referring to the famous horses of the Arab world, but also playing on the associations of 'barbarian' with paganism and savagery.' 'Shakespeare problematises the use of 'black' as a negative signifier.' -Karen Kay. I agree with both of these statements, as Shakespeare refers to Othellos race throughout. Iago is the one person that refers to Othello's race the whole way through the place, 'the moor'. 'Othello is using a contrast between the Turks / Ottomites, who are Muslims, and the Christians.
