Macbeth: In the 1600's Shakespeare wrote his play "Macbeth" to entertain the audience of the time, and also the Danish King who was taking a trip to England at the time. In this play Shakespeare uses a wide range of different characters and of different personalities to really make an impression on the audience of the time. The one thing that Shakespeare thought would really get him respected by royalty was to include witches in the play, he does this because a member of his audience was increasingly obsessed with witches and witchcraft, this was King James II. King James II became obsessed with witches when he was on his way to the Berwick witch trials, when the witches were believed to have cast a storm on the King's ships to try and kill him.
