Amandeep Ghuman 11 Red Macbeth Coursework Macbeth started of as Thane of Glamis, shortly after the witches' prediction that he would become Thane of Cawdor news broke that the previous thane had been sentenced to death that made Macbeth the new Thane of Cawdor. Along with predicting Macbeth would become the new Thane of Cawdor, the witches also predicted that he would become King of Scotland. The thought of killing King Duncan horrified Macbeth but Macbeth reacted to his first instincts as his ambition to become king overcame any doubts he had and he killed Duncan to achieve the position of King of Scotland. Macbeth is very shocked and bemused when he sees the witches in Act One Scene Three, when he says "Speak if you can: what are you?" This shows that he isn't quite sure who or what the witches are or why the witches have come to meet...
