In "Macbeth", William Shakespeare used three witches in his play. Shakespeare put spirits and ghosts in lots of his plays but in no other play did he make these witches as horrible and demon-like as the witches in Macbeth. During Shakespeare's time the king of England was James I. He had written on witches and witchcraft. He was interested in witches because "Anges Sampson", a witch, was supposed to have caused the storm that nearly killed him. James I was on his way to Denmark to get married. After that James I was terrified of witches and he got parliament to pass a law promising death to anyone practicing witchcraft. Shakespeare learnt about the witches from James I. Therefore, there is a historical background for witches in Shakespeare's play. In Shakespeare's time people were very superstitious. They used to believe in witches and were terrified of them.
