1 Sarah Allymohamed How far do you think the witches are responsible for the downfall of Macbeth? In William Shakespeare's time they believed in the powers of the supernatural. Many women were burnt at the stake on the suspicion of being a witch. These witches could speak to the Devil and the dead. They were able to fly and powers of invisibility. The witches were supposed to disguise evil spirits in animals. In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the witches are important characters in the play. This is because Macbeth probably would not have murdered Duncan, if the witches had not cleverly hinted. I think there would not have of been a story. I think the witches definitely contributed to Macbeth's downfall (most things that he did.) The witches had Macbeth on his way of madness. The witches look wild and don't look like anything on earth. They have skinny lips...
