The Ever-Present Past Angelina Baker 10/11/07 Although the past and the present are two different periods of time, what has occurred in the past will create the present. In Eugene O'Neill's Long Days Journey into Night, the characters are affected by their past situations. The father, James Tyrone, actions are due to his rough childhood. The same goes for his wife Mary Tyrone, who lived secluded from the outside world. Their two sons, Jamie and Edmund, are also affected from their parent's past, as shown by their relationship with each other. The power of the past plays a large part in the play that impacts the characters greatly. James Tyrone lives off a horrible childhood that affects his work ethic and current lifestyle.
