English Commentary on Hamlet's soliloquy in Act 4 Scene 4: This soliloquy is taken from act 4, scene 4 of the play. Fortinbras is traveling through Denmark on his way to attack Poland. Fortinbras orders his captain to go and ask the king of Denmark for permission to travel through his lands. On his way, the captain encounters Hamlet, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern on their way to the ship bound for England. The captain informs them that the Norwegian army is riding through Denmark to fight the Poles. Hamlet asks why they are going to war and the captain tells them that they are going to fight over a "little patch of ground that hath in it no profit but the name" and Hamlet is amazed by the thought that a blood bath is going to happen over something that is so insignificant.
