"Frailty, thy name is woman." What does the play reveal about the perception of women by men in Shakespeare's society? To research the perception of women, we must look even further back in time than Shakespeare, to the basis of literature. Since biblical times, women have been criticised as being frail. Eve, the alleged first women, was the one who was tempted by the snake, and destroyed men's happiness in Eden. It is also pertinent to point out, however, that it was Eve who tempted Adam, showing that women can be scheming towards men. Another biblical figure would be Mary, only seen fit to be the mother of Christ as she was a virgin, and therefore, pure and virtuous. Paintings from C16th, depicting both contemporary images and biblical images portray women as frail. This was all deeply rooted in religion, another thing men were in control of.
