Nicola White 'Frailty, thy name is woman!' In what ways does this comment help to illuminate the play 'Hamlet'? Frailty is defined as the condition of being infirm or physically weak, if you are seen as frail most people will believe you to have a flaw in your character. In Hamlet by William Shakespeare; this quotation, "Frailty thy name is woman!" is taken to mean that women are weaker than men, physically as well as emotionally. Shakespeare portrays women as how he would view them in his plays, he considers them weak, frail, un-able to function for themselves without the help of a man, and less deserving of all the prosperities that it means to be human. His portrayal reflects society as Shakespeare mirrors women's roles in the Elizabethan era is his play 'Hamlet'.
