Chris Nation English XII - Fred Huntington 11/23/03 - 12/4/03 Hamlet Paper Enmeshed in Evil In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet faces the inner struggle to find the courage to avenge the death of his father. Throughout the play, Hamlet struggles to contain his rage until he has the perfect opportunity for revenge. Eventually, Hamlet must become enmeshed in evil in order to avenge his father. The tragic nature of the play is realized in the final act, when Hamlet sacrifices himself in an act that is paradoxically both good an evil. It is because of Hamlet's difficult position -- one in which he needs to enmesh himself in evil while also holding back the overwhelming evil that builds inside of him - that he is such a compelling character. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet is downtrodden and discouraged at the death of his father. Hamlet laments: "O God, God, How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable...
