... Discuss Hamlet's antic disposition as the consequence of a corrupt state. The narrative of Hamlet is formed around lies. In some sense, every character has an element of dishonesty about them. As a philosophical and introspective character, the idea of existing in a society of misinformation and treachery is entirely alien to Hamlet. He exists primarily in thought, and for the purposes of the play, thought is seen to be completely free from corruption. Yet, amidst this, he must also function simultaneously in the physical world, with which he is fundamentally incompatible. Through his crime, Claudius compels Hamlet to act, where he is unable to; through his treachery, he contributes to an even greater sense of falseness that makes life unliveable for him.
