Emma Bassett "Examine the way in which Shakespeare portrays the contrasting values of Rome and Egypt in 'Antony and Cleopatra'. The play 'Antony and Cleopatra' deals with many contrasting images, most notably those between Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, which relates to the Rome versus Egypt divide, present throughout the play. In my interpretation of Antony and Cleopatra, I will try to discuss the ways in which the differences are portrayed and used to produce reactions in the viewing audience. Whether Antony and Cleopatra had the living, or whether Caesar has the world can be shown in textual evidence, and I will examine how Shakespeare deals with the opposition of Rome and Egypt. Throughout the play we are shown the views of all three main characters, but in some scenes we are privy to their closest confidantes' views, such as Enobarbus and Eros.
