What purpose does Act 1 Scene 1 have as a whole and what effect does it have on the audience. Antony and Cleopatra opens with 2 minor characters discussing the title characters. This is a device used by William Shakespeare to give the audience a view of the main characters before they are seen. The discussion between Philo and Demetrius tells the audience that Antony is a 'captain' and a 'triple pillar of the world' and he is likened to Mars, the god of war. This gives the audience a very positive opinion of Antony; if he is respected by his colleagues he must be an admirable man. The audience know that he is an important figure with great power and responsibility. On the other hand the impression given of Cleopatra is distinctly negative. She is described as 'strumpet and a 'gypsy', who has misled Antony. The audience is immediately...
