How are the different worlds of Rome and Egypt portrayed in Antony and Cleopatra? Shakespeare highlights the differences in culture and values of Rome and Egypt through the Characters within the play. He portrays two very extreme and influential characters to represent the characteristics of the places he is trying to show the audience. Shakespeare emphasises the contrast in his layout and structure of the play. He continually changes between the two alternative scenes of Rome and Egypt. This means the audience is always aware of both cultures and makes it easier to directly compare the cultures way of life. By using historical characters the audience already has an idea of the characteristic they believe Cleopatra and Antony embody. Cleopatra is known from her sexual manner among the leaders in Europe throughout her life. This is reinforced early on in the play when her past affairs are mentioned. We therefore are...
