1. Do you think that Thomas Priestley's evidence to the Middlesex magistrates is totally accurate? Thomas Priestley's evidence to the Middlesex Magistrates seems to be mainly truthful, although in some areas it is clear that both he and Joseph Sefton have lied. It is a worth noting that the statement was signed with an X. Priestley was illiterate, and therefore could not have known what was on the document. This means that what Priestly said at the trial may not be what we are given. Another thing that questions the reliability is some of the language used "by Priestly" is far too complicated and advanced for a thirteen year old illiterate boy. It is highly doubtful that he would say that he worked at a "cotton manufactory", that it is "situated" at Styal, and that he was employed by "Mr. Greg aforesaid" or that his "elopement" was to see his mother....
