Mohamed Himedan 15 March, 2006 AP Literature, 1st Ms. Mason Jason Compson's Complexity Characters in literature are often misunderstood. In the Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, Jason Compson is the most complex character. He is also the most disliked character because he appears to be selfish, overly authoritative, and racist. These characteristics are actually based upon his belief that he is helping the family. Jason appears to be a greedy man driven by self interests when he deals with the family's finances, but in reality, he does not benefit from any of the money. He takes Caddy's checks for Ms. Compson and Quentin, cashes them, and keeps the money. He then burns a fake check in front of his mother and the rest of the family to express his belief that she is no longer a part of the family.
