Pages 18 to 21 Why is this part pf the play significant to the play as a whole? This scene is significant to the play because it helps develop the characters of Dr Emerson and Dr Scott. We see an arrogant side to Dr E, who is certain (because he is more knowledgeable about medicine) that he is right on the decision to give Ken the Valium. However, we see that Dr S feels differently and doesn't believe Ken should have to take the unnecessary drug if he doesn't want to and wants to keep a clear mind. This part of the play is more serious and helps develop the theme of professionalism, Dr E is an example of this. Also, at the start of the scene, we hear Dr E talking on the phone about buying a new heart-monitoring unit; this develops another theme that is financial pressures facing the...
