Translations-Hugh The character Hugh from the book Translations is the headmaster of the hedge school. He seems to be well educated with a high status amongst the people of the hedge school due to his position as headmaster. Hugh's good education can by seen by the high class of lexis adopted by him such as "vesperal salutations" and "adequately sobrius". Hugh seems to be an intimidating and disliked figure amongst the people of the hedge school. This is suggested by stage directions and language by characters, "Sarah suddenly mimes a warning that the master is coming. The atmosphere changes. Sudden business. Heads down." As they hear Hugh is coming "The atmosphere changes" and they put their "Heads down". This is a strong paralinguistic feature as the image of heads going down suddenly and the atmosphere changing suggests fear and intimidation.
