"The Crucible" by Arthur Miller Title/Question: In what kind of community does Miller root proctor? "The Crucible" was set in Salem, Massachusetts in the spring year of 1692. The setting of the play is near the edge of a forest where the American continent stretched west and the people of Salem felt threatened because Indian tribes were known to marauder from time to time. The people also thought that the forest was where the devil was because the Indians were not Christians and were not "paying homage" to God. I know that there are Indians in the forest and they do attack Salem because in the play Abigail says to the other girls when she is threatening them not to tell about their dancing, "I saw Indians smash my dear parents Heads on the pillow next to mine" Salem is a community of farmers who work very hard to earn a living on the...
