The community of Salem has descended into chaos and panic as Abigail and friends accuse honourable and well-respected citizens of Salem of witchcraft. Morality, righteousness, justice and honesty have long evaporated from crucible of Salem, leaving behind the stain of corruption. Indeed, Proctor's statement is an accurate representation of what is occurring in Salem society - injustice and the dissension of society.
