The community of Salem has descended into chaos and panic as Abigail and friends accuse honourable and well-respected citizens of Salem of witchcraft. Morality, righteousness, justice and honesty have long evaporated from crucible of Salem, leaving behind the stain of corruption. Indeed, Proctor's statement is an accurate representation of what is occurring in Salem society - injustice and the dissension of society. Proctor bellows this phrase after the questioning of Elizabeth, Abigail and him, after he is also convicted of witchcraft and sent to the dungeons when evidently he is not guilty.
