Brad Spencer English 1302 Mrs. Hudler January 24, 2003 A & P: Abandoned & Paladin Updike depicts Sammy's distraction in the story with his infatuation with the girls. This distraction causes a deficient in Sammy's work ethic, leading to carelessness in his simple duties. He mentions this when a customer notices his neglect, "I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not. I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell." Blinding him from his work obligations, a proud impulse causes him to suddenly quit his job despite the consequences that will result from this choice. Conflicts between Sammy and the store, customers and the girls, and the manager and the girls lead to Sammy's distraction and ultimately, his choice to resign from his position at the store. As mentioned above, Sammy deals with conflict between himself and the store....
