Merit 4 my own client My client Jim doesn't have any trouble hearing but he finds it quite difficult to talk as the stroke affected his speech. I would talk to Jim just like I would talk to anyone else, in a dignified manner. Disability etiquette Listen attentively when you're talking to a person who has speech impairment. Keep your manner encouraging rather than correcting. Exercise patience rather than attempting to speak for a person with a speech difficulty. When necessary ask short questions that require short answers or a nod or a shake of the head. Never pretend to understand if you are having difficulty doing. Repeat what you understood or incomplete the interviewee's statements. Care organisations need to be aware of the language needs of clients and provide interpretation services when necessary.
