'Why did the Spanish Armada fail in 1588' Philip II of Spain sent the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588 for four reasons. Firstly, for the previous twenty years or so Francis Drake and John Hawkins, two English sailors, had been raiding treasure ships returning to Spain. Philip called them pirates, Queen Elizabeth of England called them buccaneers. Secondly, Philip was a strong Catholic. After Mary, the previous English queen (who was Catholic) had been beheaded, the Protestant Elizabeth came to the throne. Philip believed it was his duty to bring England back to Catholicism. Thirdly, the countries we now know as Holland and Belgium rebelled against the Spanish in 1568. This battle went on for over one hundred years and Elizabeth supported the Dutch in 1585. Finally, Francis Drake sailed into Cadiz harbour in 1587. He destroyed thirty Spanish warships. Drake boasted he had 'singed the King of Spain's beard'. Philip began to...
