Justin Williams Professor Chandler English 121 M May 7, 2002 William Carlos Williams: As Influential to Poetry as He was to the Lives of His Patients William Carlos Williams is not widely recognized for his contributions to the world of poetry on the same level as his contemporaries Robert Frost or even T.S. Eliot; however, "few writers had a more intense understanding of what being 'American' meant" and, through uniqueness in voice and style, revolutionized modern poetry. (Wagner-Martin). Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey on September 17, 1883. As the child of an English/Danish father, William George Williams, and French/Spanish/Puerto Rican mother, Raquel Helene Hoheb, Williams had the ability to grow and experience American culture from a different perspective than many of his literary contemporaries (Hamilton).
