Using your knowledge of The Half Brothers by Elizabeth Gaskell explain the social and cultural differences which existed in the nineteenth century. The Half Brothers is a short story by Elizabeth Gaskell which was written in 1858 in the nineteenth century. It is clear from the characters and events in the story, that life then was very different from our experiences in the 21st century. Medicine existed in the 19th century but antibiotics didn't, and there was no immunisation. There also weren't many qualified doctors because not many people could afford to have an education because of the cost. Now a day's most of the illnesses and diseases are rarely heard of and there are injections to prevent them. Also in the 19th century there were many deaths that were to do with to do with childbirth, nowadays there are much fewer death tolls of childbirth. An example from the story The Half Brothers of...
