Discuss and illustrate some of the different ways spoken language is used to establish persona and develop the themes of the poets. The features of spoken English are often incorporated into poetry. The fragmented, layered and sometimes chaotic features that characterise Metaphysical poetry also conveniently describe the features of spoken English. However, the features of spoken English do not only extend to Metaphysical poetry. I have examined two ballads that were originally spoken as opposed to being written. Finally, a surprising source of the aforementioned characteristics is found in a poem from the Elizabethan period.
