POETRY IN THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM - IT IS WORTH A TRY There is one overwhelming argument in favour of teaching poetry and that is that it is a form of communication and a part of an English teacher's job is to teach communication skills. Some suggest that poetry is the most practiced creative exercise in the world; not everyone writes a short story, a novel, or paints a picture, but almost everyone has written a poem. Gilian Lazar claims that a poem is a good way to encourage students to talk and draw them into conversation so that they can express their own personal feelings and opinions. Thus, by sharing their views with each other students become more actively involved both intellectually and emotionally in learning English.
