For my talk I am going to illustrate the roles of women in language and the strategies used by them. There is an organisation dedicated to the different roles of gender within the language. It is called the Organisation for the Study of Communication Language and Gender (OSCLG). The organisation grew from a series of conferences that began at Bowling Green State University in 1978. Since that time it has worked to provide a place for professional discussion, presentation of research and demonstration of creative projects on the subjects of communication, language and gender. The main issue I am going to cover is the difference in Gender and politeness strategies used. The argument that there is a difference in men and women speech styles has been supported by one of the largest and most extensive studies performed by Holmes in 1995.
