READING TASK - "My Dearest Annie" and "Uluru" In the passage by Rachel Henning, she is writing a letter to a friend or relative. In doing so she uses phrases and language which would seem old-fashioned and formal to today's society. Meanwhile, Ruby Langford writes in a more modern and simple form in the passage entitled "Uluru". Within the first paragraph, Rachel Henning establishes her use and level of language. In the first sentence the word 'dear' is used to describe the face of 'Annie', the lady with whom she is conversing. This word would not be used in this context today. Also, the use of the words 'vexed' and 'certainly' (when used in the middle of a sentence) are not common in a more modern dialect. She then continues on to describe the 'young digger' as "...not quite a gentleman nor yet a common man." As today's Australian society & government attempts...
